Philly Man Charged In Principal’s Beating Death
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – A west Philadelphia man has been arrested in the beating death of a former school principal.
Authorities told The Philadelphia Inquirer that 39- year-old David Lawrence was arrested Thursday in the July 1 death of 58-year-old Ennis Manns of Elkins Park.
Manns was principal of the Edwin Vare Middle School in south Philadelphia until his retirement last year and was formerly principal at the Decatur and Bryant elementary school.
After retirement, he worked as an educational consultant with Universal Companies. Executive vice president Janis Butler said his colleagues were having trouble “coming to terms with this kind of senseless violence against a gentle man.’’
Lawrence is charged with murder, robbery and theft. A listed number for him could not be found Saturday and it was unclear whether he had an attorney.
