To Attend Youth Leadership Awards
Courtney Strait, daughter of Brian and Gerri Strait of Warfordsburg, and a senior at Southern Fulton High School, completed the requirements of the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards at Juniata College in Hungingdon, Pa., from June 12-15, 2011.
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive four-day leadership development and training program for selected high school juniors who will be entering their senior year. Participants must be in good academic standing and are selected based on their potential leadership skills. Hancock Rotary Club provided scholarships for attendance.
The students are housed in campus dorms and share a room with a student from another area.
The challenging curriculum includes a “getting to know you” ice breaker, team building excercises, a community service project, a business developement project, (Strait’s team received first place), and instructions on the values and ideals of Rotry, an international service based organization whose motto is “Service Above Self.”
A dedicated staff composed of Rotarians and other volunteers is actively involved in the day-to-day operation and instruction of the attendees.
Upon completion of this course, student participants have a better understanding of the need for them to be actively involved in service to their local communities and our world as a whole.
