Alliance: No Plans For Longwall Mine By Pa. Farm

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Alliance Resource Partners LP says it has no intention to do any long-wall mining near an historic farm in Pennsylvania that has been operating since 1797.

The Tulsa, Okla.-based company said in a statement Friday that it had not applied for a permit to do long-wall mining near the Isaac Manchester Farm near Avella, which this week was listed among the nation’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in America by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

In long-wall mining, the roof of coal falls to a conveyor belt that ferries the material to the surface. Critics contend that is more likely to cause sinking on the surface.
