Ruby C. Hill
Ruby Carol Hill, Bedford, died Tuesday, May 17, 2011.
She was born in Tunas, Miss., and was the daughter of Hughie Lafayette and Carrie Evelyn (Morrow) Virgen.
She served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, where she met and married Robert William Hill, who preceded her in death. As a SPAR in the U.S. Coast Guard, she was stationed at the Coast Guard Intelligence Office in New York City.
She graduated from Tunas High School.
She worked many years as a teacher, beginning in a one-room schoolhouse in Missouri, and retiring from the Bedford school system, as the third-grade teacher at the Harrison-Manns Choice Elementary. She was a member of the National Education Association, and Pennsylvania State Education Association. She enjoyed playing bridge and reading.
She was the last remaining member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by her parents and seven siblings: Raymond Virgen, Margaret Cora Ellen Griffith, Ora Virge, Edna Virgen, Hughie Oren Virgen, Clifford Glenn Virgen and Sally Fern Zabel.
In addition, she is survived by two children: Judy, husband of Matthew Hillegas, Everett; and Jeffrey Hill and companion Amanda O’Neal of McConnellsburg; grandchildren: Matthew Hillegas Jr., Steven Hill, Cara, husband of Cordell Ebersole, Kristen and husband Matthew Chase, Brian Hill, Stacey Hill and Wyatt Hill and the following greatgrandchildren: Xavier Maslowski, Paige Hillegas, Noelle Ebersole, Marissa Hillegas, Nadia Ebersole and T.J. Chase.
Funeral services were held at the Bedford Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 21, at 2:30 p.m. Rev. Doug Friant officiated. Burial was at Bedford County Memorial Park.
