Jr. High Baseball Wrap-up
Northern Bedford 12
After jumping out to an early 2-0 lead May 9, the Spartans had to fight back from deficits of 7-2 after three innings and 9-8 after five innings. The Spartans scored nine runs in the sixth inning to take the lead and never relinquished it on their way to 23-12 victory over Northern Bedford.
Ryan Koontz got the win in relief. Koontz, along with Ethan Mellott, William Casher and Taylor Souders, struck out seven in the victory. The Spartans scored 23 runs on 13 hits, 13 walks and five hit batters. Justin Welsh was 4 for 6 with a double and six RBIs. Taylor Souders went 3 for 4 with three runs and two RBIs. Ethan Mellott added his second home run of the year, a 3-run blast in the sixth. William Casher and Colton Strait each added four runs for the Spartans. Eleven different Spartans scored runs on their way to improving their record to 12-1 on the year.

Chestnut Ridge 9
The Spartans lost their second game of the year May 10, falling to Chestnut Ridge 9-6. The Spartans battled back from deficits of 3-2, 4-3 and 6-4 to tie the game at six going into the last inning. Chestnut Ridge responded with three runs in the top of the seventh and the Spartans could not answer. Ethan Mellott went the distance, allowing eight hits and striking out five.
The Spartans scored six runs on eight hits, one hit by pitch and five walks. Ethan Mellott and William Casher each had two hits for the Spartans. Offensive stats: Taylor Souders (1-3, 3 runs, walk); Colton Strait (2 walks, 1 run); Mellott (2-3, run, RBI); Casher (2-4, run, 2 RBIs); Justin Welsh (1-4, 2 RBIs); Ryan Koontz (1-4); and Landon Richards (1-3).
The loss moved the junior high record to 12-2 with both losses coming at the hands of Chestnut Ridge.
Tussey Mountain 7-20
The junior high team was swept in a double-header at Tussey Mountain 8-6 and 20- 0. The Spartans battled throughout game one but came up short in the final inning as Tussey Mountain scored on a walk-off single. William Casher, Taylor Souders and Ryan Koontz pitched, combining to allow seven Titan runs on ten hits and two strikeouts. Offensively, the Spartans scored six runs on seven hits and five walks. Taylor Souders was 2-2 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Ryan Koontz added two hits for the Spartans.
In the nightcap, the Spartans never recovered from the first game letdown and were defeated 20-0. Justin Barnard, Taylor Souders, Patrick Tomlinson and Ryan Koontz pitched, allowing 16 hits, while walking nine and striking out two. Ethan Mellott and Hunter Walls produced the only hits in game two.
The Spartans concluded their season with a 12- 4 record. The team outscored their opponents 180-57 while outhitting their opponents 150-55 for the year. With 12 of the 18 roster members being first-time players at the junior high level, the future looks exciting for Spartan baseball.
