CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.—A central Pennsylvania caregiver who pinned a Down syndrome patient to the floor during a struggle will stand trial in his death.

Magisterial District Judge Gary Carter on Tuesday ordered 40- year-old Joseph Easton to stand trial on an involuntary manslaughter charge in the September 9 death of Timothy Bradford Smith.

Investigators say the 37-yearold Smith attacked Easton at a care home in Guilford Township, Franklin County and Easton restrained him by pinning him down. An autopsy found Smith died of traumatic asphyxia.

A judge dismissed an involuntary manslaughter charge against Easton on March 8 but prosecutors refiled the charge on March 17.

Workers at the home told police Smith had a history of violence and would frequently pretend to be asleep or unresponsive.
