Max Baer, owner of the service station and store at Shade Gap, which was recently destroyed by fire, plans to rebuild his business on the same location. He hopes to be open for gas sales by Saturday and to reopen the grocery store as soon as the structure can be rebuilt.
For the second time in recent months, costly fires, ruled as arson, have destroyed two medical buildings in Greencastle last Wednesday at 2 a.m. The Patalinghug Professional Building, which housed the offices of two physicians, was destroyed by a deliberately set fire, as was the John L. Grove Medical Center on January 21.
Cited at Sunday night’s VFW post commander’s banquet were Gertrude Souders and Grover Strait. Souders was presented with a certificate honoring her many years of service to the ladies auxiliary. Strait was honored for his distinguished service with the Flying Bengal Tigers and his long association with the VFW.

McConnellsburg’s Tom Peck finished fourth in the late models feature and Roger Watkins finished in the top 10 in the limited feature in racing action at the Hagerstown Speedway Sunday. Speedway promoter Frank Plessinger also announced that on May 10, the purse will be stepped up to $800 for a special 35-lap late model championship, which will include the current NASCAR Grand National point leader Bobby Allison. Allison, who competed at Hagerstown in 1975, finished second after Richard Petty in this year’s Daytona 500.
