New Bishop Officially Installed
ALTOONA, Pa. (AP) – It’s the first official day on the job for Bishop Mark Bartchak as the new leader of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown.
The 56-year-old Bartchak was installed Tuesday night in a three-hour service at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. More than 1,100 people attended the service presided over by Cardinal Justin Rigali, the archbishop of Philadelphia.
Pope Benedict XVI named Bartchak the new Altoona Johnstown bishop in January. He had been the judicial vicar of the Diocese of Erie and an adviser to Erie Bishop Donald Trautman for nearly two decades.
Bartchak will oversee an eight-county diocese with about 94,000 Catholics.
