William J. Locke
William Jackson “Jack” Locke, 84, a resident of Woodland Retirement Community, Orbisonia, and formerly of Shade Gap, died at 2:05 p.m., Friday, April 15, 2011, at Woodland.
Born April 14, 1927, in Shade Gap, he was the son of the late William Marion and Orpha (Piper) Locke. He was married to Janet Ruth Locke on April 20, 1946, in Hagers-town, Md. She preceded him in death on April 20, 2003.
He is survived by five children: Ronald J. Locke, Huntingdon; Bonnie L. Locke, Shade Gap; J. Diane (Locke) Popp, Hagerstown; Randall W. Locke, Shade Gap; and Steven R. Locke, Shade Gap; one sister, Joann Jamison, Fayetteville; four grandchildren; and one greatgrandson.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter; two brothers: Donald and Ralph Locke; and two sisters: Violet Miller and Verna Briggs.
He was a member of the Fair Ridge Assembly of God Church, Shade Gap.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Merchant Marines.
A dairy farmer nearly all his life, he also engaged in lumbering and ran a sawmill. He did general hauling, often coal and paper wood. He also worked at the construction of the Tuscarora Tunnel on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
He was a former Dublin Township supervisor. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at Fair Ridge Assembly of God Church, Shade Gap. Rev David Hamilton and Rev. Marlin “Butch” Neil officiated. Interment was in Fair Ridge Cemetery.
