Corbett Doesn’t Waver In Anti-drilling Tax Stance
HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) – Gov. Tom Corbett is reaffirming his stand against any state tax on natural gas drilling while vowing to guard against environmental harm from the drilling expanding across Pennsylvania.
Corbett addressed a crowd of about 1,500 township officials Monday at a convention of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors in Hershey.
Corbett drew scattered applause when he said he would not let drilling companies poison Pennsylvania’s water but he said environmental safeguards have to be based on “science and not emotion.”
He denied his opposition to an extraction tax stems from the generous contributions the industry made to his campaign last year. He said even if they had not given him a dime in contributions he would oppose a tax because it might limit job creation.
