For the past three weekends, forestry officials and volunteer firefighters have fought forest fires in the northwestern part of Fulton County, which, in the opinion of George Winning, chief forester for District I, have been deliberately set. The latest one, which was started around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, was the hardest to bring under control and destroyed approximatley 360 acres of timber, helped by the high winds and extremely dry conditions. It was finally quelled around midnight with the help of a force of more than 100 volunteer firemen and state forestry crews.

Two Fulton County 4-H members who will soon have a voice in shaping the state’s laws called upon area legislators to explain the functions of government at citizenship activities in Harrisburg, April 19-20. Participating in Pennsylvania 4-H Capital Days from Fulton County were David Shives of Hancock and Eileen Hixon of Crystal Spring.

Marriage licenses: Roger A. Watkins of Robertsdale and Ruth Ann Henry of Hustontown; Benny Varone of Rankin, Pa., and Nancy Shifflett of Greenwood, Va.

Descendants of the Allen and Amanda Smith family gathered, as planned, at Pleasant Grove dining hall on Sunday, April 25, after Sunday School and worship with baskets, boxes, etc., of food to enjoy together.

Harry Carbaugh of Fulton Industries Inc., McConnellsburg, recently returned from Cleveland, Ohio, where he participated in a weeklong seminar with 40 other supervisors and welding specialists from all sections of the United States in studying new manufacturing and fabricating cost reduction techniques.

Mrs. Laura Covert of Clear Ridge underwent ear surgery in the Lewistown Hospital on Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Strait and Miss Jo Anne Adams of St. Thomas motored the past weekend to the Marine base at Parris Island, S.C., to attend the graduation ceremonies on Tuesday morning of their son, Eldon. This is the Straits’ second son to enlist in the Marine Corps.

Births at the Medical Center: a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Mellott of McConnellsburg on April 18; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Mellott of Needmore on April 19; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sipes of McConnellsburg on April 19; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. David Strait of Mc- Connellsburg on April 20; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Lake of Big Cove Tannery on April 21; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Landis B. Stains of Harrisonville on April 22; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Duvall of Robertsdale on April 22.

Army Cpl. Robert L. Ramsey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ramsey of Hustontown, recently received the Army Commendation Medal at Hawk Hill, Vietnam.
