SF Registration Southern Fulton School District will hold pre-K registration on May 12 for those children of the district who have reached their fourth birthday before September 1, 2011. There may also be openings for children who will have reached their third birthday before September 1, 2011. There are openings in both morning and afternoon programs regardless of income guidelines. Anyone having a child eligible and are interested in the program should contact the school at 294-3400.
Benefit Yard/Bake Sale A benefit bale sale and yard sale for the late Tina Souders will be held Saturday, April 30, at Cito Church Fellowship Hall, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Also available will be hot food, raffle, ribbons, etc. To donate anything for the bake or yard sales, call 717-573-4004 or drop off at the church Friday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Mushroom Walk/Workshop Woodland Owners of the Southern Alleghenies (WOSA) and the Western PA Mushroom Club, with cooperation from Shawnee State Park, will host a mushroom walk and grow-your-own-shiitake-mushrooms workshop in the park at Pavilion 9 on Saturday, May 7, at 1 p.m. Participants will inoculate logs with shiitake mushroom spawn and are asked to bring their own logs (preferably oak) three to six inches in diameter and about three feet long. Some logs will be available at the site for those unable to bring their own. The spawn and tools needed to do the inoculation will be provided. Fee per log will be $3 for WOSA and Western PA Mushroom Club members, and $6 for nonmembers. More information may be obtained by calling 717-485-3148.
Republican Commissioner Candidates Forum The public is cordially invited to attend a forum in which the Republican candidates will be asked questions on current issues. The candidates will then be available after the forum to talk with individuals. The forum will be held on Thursday, April 21, at 6 p.m., at Fulton Theatre. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and questions from the public must be submitted by 5:45 p.m.
Fundraiser There will be a fundraiser to benefit Second Time Around. Sponsored by the Community State Bank. Chicken noodle soup will be available for $5 a quart and chili for $6 a quart and fresh baked bread $2 loaf. Taking orders until April 22. Family Place Workshop Family Place Parent/Child Workshop Friday, April 15, at 10:30 a.m. in the community room of the Fulton County Library. Special guest will be Christine McQuade with Fulton County Children’s Services.
Irrigation Workshop Fulton County Master Gardeners will hold a workshop and presentation to learn more about an irrigation system using clay pots on May 21, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Butterfly Gardens, Cito Road, McConnellsburg. Workshops ‘Finding Your Voice Workshops’ will be held on April 29 and 30 at the Hancock Community Center. These workshops are jointly sponsored by the Morgan County Forum for Arts, Science and Technology and the Hancock Arts Council and are open to anyone within the TriState area. They will be led by Charles Williams, who is called “A True Patron Saint of the Voice.” He is not only patient and supportive, but also skilled in bringing out the best in each student’s voice.
Dog Therapy Orientation Quincy Village Retirement Community will host an orientation on therapy dogs. All teams are registered by and insured through Therapy Dogs Inc., a national organization in Cheyenne, Wyo. Therapy dog teams do many things in our communities with people of all ages. Daytime and evening programs available. No special education is required. Join on Saturday, April 23, at 10 a.m. in Quincy’s Minnich Manor Building, Hess Room, located off Route 997, three miles north of Waynesboro. Meet therapy dogs and speak to handlers who know.
FR Red Bird Registration Forbes Road Red Bird registration will be held Wednesday, April 13, and Thursday, April 14. Red Birds will have to be 4 by the first day of school on August 22. Kindergarten registration is scheduled for Friday, April 15. Kindergarten students will have to be 5 by September 1. Kindred Spirits Auction Kindred Spirits have seven auctions planned for this year. The first one will be Saturday, April 30, for Alton Reffner, who has heart problems. Auction items are needed for each event along with baked goods. Watch the costsaver section in the “News” for dates and details. All auctions will be held at Green Hill Sewing Club, with dinner at 5 p.m. and the auction at 6 p.m.
Environmental Open House An Environmental open house and Festival of the Arts will be held Saturday, May 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Southern Fulton Elementary. There will be demonstrations on spinning, music, basket weaving, wood turning, calligraphy, quilting, jewelry making, fly tying, food, art displays and hiking.
Mother’s Day Flower Sale St. Stephen Family Life Committee will have a Mother’s Day flower sale Friday, May 6, in front of Snyder’s Insurance office from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and at St. Stephen’s on Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to noon. Hanging basket and flowerpots will be available.
AARP Tax Help Free tax help and e-filing is available for taxpayers with low or middle income. Any age, not just elderly, at Fulton Theatre behind F&M Trust, McConnellsburg, every Wednesday starting February 2 to April 13, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please bring all the following: last year’s income tax returns, current years tax forms such as W-2s, 1099-Int., 1099- Div. 1099-B, 1099-R, Social Security, etc. Must have last year’s taxes to be able to e-file.
