Pa. Woman, 78, Killed When SUV Hit By Train
SOMERSET, Pa. (AP) – Authorities in western Pennsylvania say an elderly woman died after her sport utility vehicle was hit by a train.
Somerset police say the woman was heading south on Route 281 at about 10:30 a. m. Saturday and was crossing the tracks when the CSX train struck her SUV.
Officials said 78-year-old Ann Simpson was killed.
Borough police chief Randy Cox says all of the signals were apparently functioning properly, but Simpson failed to heed them and drove into the path of the train.
Cox said a borough officer witnessed the accident, and the train operator tried to slow down but did not have enough time to prevent the crash.
Police said they were waiting on a medical report to determine if a medical condition contributed to the crash.
