Racing Roundup

By Brad Vores

It was the first weekend of the 2011 season that all three regular 410 Sprint car tracks were in action.

Action kicked off with the season opener on Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway where Stevie Smith led all the way for his second career opening day win at the track. Gorgeous weather greeted a big opening night crowd as Smith held off a late surge from Tyler Walker for the win with Doug Esh, Lance Dewease and Cory Haas the top five finishers.

Pat Cannon won Friday’s opening 358 Sprint feature at the Grove over Scott Geesey, Billy Dietrich, Blane Heimbach and Chad Trout.

Danny Dietrich put on a dominating performance in Saturday night’s 410 Sprint feature at Lincoln Speedway, taking his first win of the year by over a half lap ahead of Fred Rahmer, Alan Krimes, Justin Collett and Brian Leppo.

The 358 late models were in action at Lincoln where it was Gene Knaub taking that win over Steve Weikel, Bernie Beard, Grant Adams and Craig Wagaman.

Port Royal Speedway opened under new management on Saturday night and it was Blane Heimbach scoring an upset win in the 410 Sprint car feature over Stevie Smith, Mark Smith, Tyler Walker and Lance Dewease with Harrisonville’s Mike Wagner finishing sixth.

Pat Cannon made it two for two in weekend 358 Sprint racing and also became the area’s all time leading 358 Sprint car winner with 56 career wins. He defeated Nate Hammaker, Logan Schuchart, Steve Buckwalter and Matt Horst.

Selinsgrove Speedway hosted the Race of Champions Modifieds over the weekend with Friday night’s 358 Small block win going to Jeff Strunk over Jimmy Horton, Duane Howard, Stewart Friesen and Danny Johnson.

Saturday night in the Big Block RoC event, Danny Johnson finished third but was awarded the win after the first and second place finishers were disqualified for failing to meet weight requirements after the race. Johnson won over Billy Decker, Brett Hearn, Dan Vauter and Jimmy Horton.

This weekend, Hagerstown Speedway is slated to open with a Saturday evening regular show beginning at 7pm.

That’s it for this week as we sure hope warmer temperatures overtake these cold days coming up! Until next time, email reaches me at Bvores@comcast.net.
