Pa. Man, 74, Dies In Flood Despite Rescue Effort

PINE GROVE, Pa. (AP) – Authorities in eastern Pennsylvania say emergency workers tried unsuccessfully to save the life of an elderly man trapped inside his vehicle on a flooded roadway.

State police in Schuylkill County say 74-year-old David Sallada of Tremont drove around barricades on Route 645 just before 9 p.m. Thursday and into flooding on both lanes of the roadway.

Police said two troopers arrived to find the man’s sedan sinking, and they and three volunteer firefighters went into the rushing water to try to free him.

Trooper Chad Smith told the (Pottsville) Republican- Herald that rescuers had to go underwater to smash a window on the sedan and were able to pull Sallada out, but he was already dead. Schuylkill County Coroner Joseph Lipsett officially pronounced Sallada dead at 10:50 p.m. Thursday.
