Pa. County Settles 86-Year-Old’s Suit For $30,000
SMETHPORT, Pa. (AP) – A newspaper’s Right-to- Know request shows a northwestern Pennsylvania county paid $30,000 to settle claims by a then-86- year-old Air Force veteran who claimed a surveillance video posted to YouTube showed the county sheriff roughing him up.
McKean County Sheriff Brad Mason declined to comment on the settlement that was reached in June 2010, according to documents obtained Thursday by the Bradford Era.
Mason had previously said he used “kid gloves’’ when after video showed him pushing Lester Watson, of Rew, in the jail parking lot in June 2008.
Watson had been arguing with the sheriff after Watson couldn’t bail a relative out of jail.
Watson pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and was fined $100 in the incident.
A relative had posted the video under the heading “what mckean county sheriff does to a vet.’’
