McConnellsburg Borough Council members discussed the possibility of holding two elected offices and granted a zoning variance at their regular meeting last Wednesday evening.

Two Borough Council members, Travis Bard and Rick Buterbaugh, have announced their county commissioner candidacy and the question was raised as to whether they can serve on both the council and the commissioner board should they be elected to the commissioner position.

According to borough secretary

Jack Fields, neither Borough Council members nor county commissioners may hold dually elected positions. Therefore, if council members are successful in their run for commissioner, they would have to choose between the two offices.

Also during Wednesday’s meeting, council granted a zoning variance to an East Market Street property owner. The property owner as well as the realtor and potential buyer requested a zoning change from residential to light commercial to allow for a small business to be operated on the property. A potential buyer was interested in moving a massage parlor business from a current location to the property which is now for sale. After hearing plans for hours of operation and parking, council unanimously granted the variance.

During other business, council also voted on a Pat Frazier/ Rick Buterbaugh motion to set bulky item pickup day for April 8 in the borough. Borough residents are instructed to put their items curbside the night before for pickup on the 8th. Fields also announced that the street sweeper would be retained for sweeping borough streets sometime around April 15.

Council also authorized Fields to use liquid fuel funds to pay Martin’s Garage for new garage door panels.

Council members voted to buy a $25 advertisement in the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism’s 4th Annual Golf Tournament program.

Regular business

During regular business, council voted to pay February bills in the amount of $18,349.78. Receipts for the same period were $12,372.78. Checks were written for $12,926.09, leaving a March 1 balance of $28,941.80.

Council members present included Travis Bard, Pat Booth, Pat Frazier, Rick Buterbaugh, Mack Shaffer and Mayor Mike Chilcote.

Borough Council meets the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Fulton House. The next regular meeting is scheduled for April 6, 2011.
