A tragic piece of Fulton County history will soon appear on the small screen when “Cry In The
Wild” is aired on one of the major networks. The made-for-TV movie, which is scheduled to air in April, recounts “Mountain Man” William Hollenbaugh’s reign of terror in the Shade Gap area from 1964 through 1966. Hollenbaugh, a loner who lived in the Shade Gap area and was called the “Bicycle Man” or “Bicycle Pete” by local residents, kidnapped Peggy Anne Bradnick, a Shade Gap teenager, in broad daylight on May 11, 1966. What followed was eight days of terror that ended when Hollenbaugh was shot down in a hail of bullets at the Luther Rubeck farm on Route 522. The movie is being shot in the San Jose foothillls of California in the small town of Cupertino and the “News” learned of the production from former area resident Bobby Riggs, who is working on a different production in that area. Robert Cox won a Pulitzer Prize for his account of the reign of terror and subsequent manhunt published in 1977 in a book entitled “Deadly Pursuit.” A song entitled “Eight Days At Shade Gap” was also recorded during the time of the manhunt, which was reported as the largest manhunt in Pennsylvania’s history.
