Racing Roundup

By Brad Vores

The 2011 racing season kicks off this week as the All- Star Circuit of Champions begin its season in Georgia tonight ( February 2) at Screvens Motor Speedway.

Following the Georgia event that pays $10,000 to win, the All-Stars head south to Ocala Raceway in Florida for two nights of action Thursday and Friday.

They get a few days off before kicking back up next Wednesday at Volusia Speedway Park where they see two nights of action before the World of Outlaws open its season at VSP beginning next Friday with three nights of action.

Several Central PA teams are headed south for competition and many of them will be competing for the 2011 All- Star Eastern Region championship, which is a 16- race series with dates in Georgia, Florida, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Canada. Greg Hodnett, Lance Dewease, Fred Rahmer, Stevie Smith, Chad Layton, Mark Smith and more are scheduled for action in Florida.

Tim Shaffer will begin his title defense for the All-Star tour, while Jason Meyers will be looking to make it two straight with the World of Outlaws. Large car counts are expected during the Winter Nationals in Florida.

Following the two weeks in Florida, weather permitting, Lincoln Speedway is looking to kick off the season locally on February 26 with the 410 Sprints. Time will certainly tell on that one, but it’s hard to believe it’s just around the corner.

Former 410 Sprint car owner Walt Dyer is home and doing well after a recent heart operation in Baltimore to repair some valves. Walt has been a lifelong brick layer and that has helped him stay so healthy over the years and hopefully many more to come. Take a minute to send him a card to let him know you are thinking about him. Cards can reach him at 245 Dyer Rd, Mercersburg, PA 17236.

Greg Hodnett and the Trone Outdoor Motorsports team have picked up major sponsorship from Eagle Steel out of Spring Run. Company owner Bobby Allison was a longtime competitor and sponsor at Path Valley and other area speedways. Welcome Eagle Steel to the 410 Sprint car ranks.

That’s a wrap for another week. E-mail reaches me at Bvores@comcast.net.
