Pa. House GOP Threatens To Roll Back Key Reform
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – The Republican leader of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives wants to limit Democrats’ ability to amend bills on the floor, a change that would roll back a rule passed in the wake of the 2005 pay-raise vote.
House Majority Leader Mike Turzai of Allegheny County told reporters Wednesday the proposed change was in response to what he considered obstructionist Democratic amendments to seven governmentreform bills scheduled for consideration later in the day.
House Republicans used the expanded amendment powers repeatedly over the past four years to alter or defeat measures supported by the Democrats, then in the majority.
Turzai says his goal is “a disciplined floor process.’’
House Democratic spokesman Bill Patton says if the Republicans make that change it won’t set a good tone for the two-year session.
