Local Work To Be Shown At Hancock Arts Fair
The Hancock Arts Council announced Monday that it will hold the community’s first local art fair on Saturday, March 26, 2011, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Hancock Community Center.
According to Arts Council Chairman Sinclair Hamilton, the art fair is intended to highlight local art talent. “We often hear of Hancock citizens or other local residents who have a special talent in art, whether it is painting, sculpting, drawing, woodworking, photography or needle art,” Hamilton said.
The fair will be judged, with first-, second- and third-place ribbons awarded in the various categories.
“One of the goals of the Arts Council is to showcase local talent,” Hamilton explained. “While we appreciate the many vendors who’ve come to our town, the purpose of this show is not to make crafts available for sale, but to reveal the talent and creativity in our own community.”
Entries will be accepted from local artists and art enthusiasts in four age groups: youth (12 and under), teen (13-18), adult (19-59), and senior (60+). Each artist may enter one piece of work in each of six categories: full quilts; other needle art (such as needlepoint, cross-stitch, etc.); drawings and paintings (such as pastel, charcoal, pencil, pen-and-ink, watercolor, acrylics, oil); woodwork (such as woodburning, carving, etc.); sculpture; other art (such as collage, pottery); and photography .
To register, entrants should bring their artwork to the Hancock Community Center on Thursday, March 24, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A parent or guardian must sign for entrants who are under age 18. Those who will be entering quilts are asked to contact Philip Clifford at 443-248-3681 no later than March 1 to arrange for displays. The Arts Council will assist with providing quilt display mechanisms for up to 12 quilt entries. Judging will take place on Friday, March 25, and the show will be open to the public on Saturday, March 26, 2011, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Artwork should be picked up by 5:00 p.m. the day of the show.
In addition to displaying artwork, the fair will also include musical entertainment. The event is free to the public, but donations to help the Arts Council in sponsoring future events will be accepted.
