Officer Changes, Executive Sessions Top FR Board Agenda

Other business mostly routine
By Jean Snyder

The Forbes Road School District Board of Directors began its regular meeting last Monday evening by making a change in board officers. Board Treasurer Deonna Carmack resigned her position and was subsequently elected vice president of the board, filling a position formerly held by Deborah Strait. Following that election, Chanin Rotz-Mountz was then elected treasurer of the board.

In other business, the board held two executive sessions – one to discuss a student issue and another to discuss personnel and negotiations. The board reconvened after the first 30-minute session, and it was moved and seconded that discipline for a student should be expulsion for the remainder of the school year. There were five “yes” votes for expulsion, two “no” votes and one abstention.

The negotiations executive session lasted approximately 43 minutes and no announcements were made.

Also on Monday evening, board members approved an Act 1 resolution as presented that states that the board will not raise the tax rate for 2010-2011 fiscal year by more than its index. The index is set by the Pennsylvania Dept. of Education and is 2.9 percent for the 2010-2011 fiscal year.

The board heard updates from school superintendent Fred Foster, high school Principal Christina Ramsey, elementary Principal Paul Swope, maintenance manager John Mixell. While Swope discussed elementary curriculum, Ramsey reported on the school musical “Footloose,” which will be presented March 17. She also reported on the school’s new mascot.

Under miscellaneous items, field trips were approved for the kindergarten to go to Mishler Theater in Altoona on March 29 and for high school math students to travel to Juniata College for the American Mathematics Competition on February 23, 2011.

Board members also approved a request to use the old school gym for recreational soccer on Friday evenings from January 7 to February 25.

The board also voted to eliminate January 17 as the first snow make-up day and to keep it as a teacher in-service day. February 18, 2011, was then designated as the first snow make-up day.

During personnel considerations, the board approved the addition of Patricia Neil to the cafeteria and custodian substitute list. Sherri Fleck was approved to be added to the teacher aide substitute list, and Alees Splendore was approved as a substitute to cover for Jill Yablonski while she is on leave.

The next regular meeting of the school board will be held on February 7, 2011, while the next negotiation meeting is also scheduled for that date.
