Technology Speeds-Up Tax Refunds

Starting February 1, 2011, the Chambersburg TaxAide Program will be doing federal, state and local tax returns FREE of charge. The program is designed to assist low- to moderate-income families, with emphasis on the elderly, to prepare income tax returns. Certain restrictions may apply.

New and improved technology has now enabled the program to prepare tax returns using computers instead of hand writing returns. Returns are printed via wireless printers and electronically file returns over a high speed Internet connection provided by CENTURYLINK instead of filing paper returns. Technology has made a big improvement in the quality of service now offered our clients.

Our clients can acquire their refunds faster if they opt to have their return filed electronically instead of paper filed. They can provide the bank’s routing number and their account number to get the refund directly deposited into their account. By giving the counselor this information, it will reduce the waiting time from approximately

20 to 30 days to 8 to 14 days.

Tax returns will be completed on a firstcome, first-served basis. No appointments will be taken. Individuals that cannot physically come to one of the sites can call 263-5476 to request counselors come to their home.

In order to receive the most efficient service, please bring the following items when you come to the sites:

Social Security cards for you, dependents and/or spouse;

A copy of your previous year’s tax returns;

All W-2’s, SSA statement and 1099s for interest, dividends, retirement and pension funds, miscellaneous income, gambling winnings and unemployment compensation;
