Murder Victim Had Local Ties

A Mechanicsburg man has been charged in the strangling death of an attorney who was employed by MidPenn Legal Services and who had represented various clients in Fulton County court proceedings.

Gary Cartwright, 27, was charged with criminal homicide in the strangling death of his fiancee, Nicole Berman, 27, of Silver Spring Township in Cumberland County.

According to police reports, Cartwright called 911 to report her death on Wednesday, December 29. He told police that he and Berman had been arguing in their townhouse on Tuesday, December 28 at approximately 5:30 p.m. and that he had strangled her. According to police, he waited until noon the next day, eighteen hours later, to report the incident.

Berman graduated from Dickinson School of Law in 2009 and was admitted to the Franklin County Bar in December 2010.

She began her employment with MidPenn Legal Services in May in Chambersburg where she represented low-income families.
