Melvin D. Powell
Melvin D. Powell, 62, Needmore, died Tuesday, December 21, 2010, from the result of a logging accident.
Born October 20, 1948, in Cumberland, Md., he was a son of the late Henry M. and Catherine Brown Powell.
He was a member of Newburg First Church of God.
He retired from the Letterkenny Army Depot and was working part-time for M&C Lumber Co. in Needmore.
He was a member of Mc- Connellsburg American Legion, NARFE, and attended Southern Fulton High School. He was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War, where he was a sharpshooter and received the Purple Heart.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy L. Hockenberry Powell; a son, Matthew D. Powell, Needmore; two daughters: Kimberly A. Shaffer and her husband, Jeffrey, Harrisonville; and Michelle R. Roxby and her husband, Scott, Waynesboro; three grandchildren: Logan, Laren and Zachary McCusker, all of Waynesboro; three stepgrandchildren: Danielle, Tyler and Abby Roxby, all of Waynesboro; one brother, Henry K. “Buddy” Powell, Stephenson,Va.; four sisters: Jackie Booth, Front Royal, Va.; Berleen Liner and Joyce Fritz, both of Hancock; and Billie Charlene Bell, Dale City, Va.; a longtime friend, neighbor Herman Hann, Needmore; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 29, in Newburg First Church of God Rev. Dale H. Miller Jr. officiated. Burial with military honors was conducted by Shippensburg American Legion and VFW posts in Otterbein Cemetery.
