A Holiday Homecoming For 7,000 Sailors, Marines
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) – Thousands of sailors and Marines with the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group are home just in time for Christmas.
The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, a guided missile cruiser and three guided missile destroyers sailed into Norfolk Naval Station to end a seven-month deployment Monday. Thousands of signwaving family members greeted the 7,000 crew members as Christmas music played.
Among the welcoming crowd were 119 new family members. The Navy set up a new moms tent for mothers and the 119 babies born during the deployment.
The carrier group supported U.S. military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Its air wing flew more than 2,900 missions.
