Bernard L. Spade
Bernard Lewis Spade, 79, Hancock, Md., died Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at his home.
Born April 21, 1931, in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Leslie Randolph and Beatrice Georgia Truax Spade.
He attended Whips Cove Church in Warfordsburg. He attended public schools in Hancock and retired as a machinist with Maryland Metals in Hagerstown. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid tinkerer and an expert at custom metal fabrication. He specialized in collecting and restoring “hit and miss” engines, which, for many years, were an attraction at the annual Berkeley Springs Apple Butter Festival.
At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife of 57 years, Edna Mae Twigg Spade, at home; one son, Charles Richard Spade, Salunga, Pa.; one daughter, Barbara Estalene Sparks of Hancock; five grandchildren: Michelle Lee Hann, Warfordsburg; Jennifer Nichole Ziler, Hancock; Steven Michael Bradt, Lititz, Pa.; Charles Alan Bradt, Rein- holds, Pa.; and Deanna Lynne Styer, Columbia, Pa.; and 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Deborah Ann Spence; and one grandson, Chad Mellott.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 16, at Whips Cove Church, Warfordsburg. Pastor Gene Harding and Pastor Freddie Parker will officiate. Interment with graveside military honors, will be provided by Tri-State Honor Guard at Whips Cove Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, at Helsley- Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, and from noon to 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the church.
