Meals On Wheels Unite To Form New Association Of PA

More than 185 nonprofit Meals on Wheels providers jave joined forces to be a part of a new association, the Meals On Wheels Association of Pennsylvania (MOWAPA).

MOWAPA is an independent organization incorporated under the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and affiliated with Meals On Wheels Association of America Inc. (MOWAA).

Senior hunger is a very real problem. A recent research study sponsored by Meals On Wheels Association of America determined that in 2007, nearly 6 million seniors within the United States faced the threat of hunger.

Pennsylvania has the third largest elderly population in the United States, following Florida and West Virginia. One out of four Pennsylvanians is over 60 and nearly 1 out of every 21 of them is at risk of hunger, according to the study.

The mission of MOWAPA is to advocate and provide networking and training opportunities for its members. This new association will also serve as a conduit for the exchange of ideas and information related to nonprofit, home-delivered meals providers and the Association.

“We are extremely excited about the formation of MOWAPA, as it will allow us to become the voice of Meals on Wheels within Pennsylvania. As a united team, there is always strength in numbers,” stated JoAnn Bergeron Nenow, executive director of Northampton County Meals on Wheels and the newly elected president of Meals on Wheels of Pennsylvania.

The founding board members of MOWAPA are as follows: Pam Bechtel, MOW Lehigh County; Marc Bloomingdale (secretary), Lutheran Service Society of Western PA MOW; Anna Carol Buffington (treasurer), MOW State College; Mimi Mikels, MOW Monroe County; Linda Steier (vice-president), MOW Northeastern PA; and Kenneth Swart, MOW Chester County. For additional information or to join MOWAPA, please call JoAnn at 610-691-1030.

The Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) is the oldest and largest national organization in the United States representing those programs that provide meals to people in need. MOWAA’s mission is to end senior hunger by 2020, so no senior goes hungry. To obtain information or locate a Meals On Wheels program, visit www.mowaa.org .
