McConnellsburg’s Christmas lights are hung and the decorations up and ready to welcome the yuletide this Friday and Saturday during the Chamber of Commerce & Tourism’s “Christmas In McConnellsburg.”

The annual celebration marks the official start of the 2010 holiday season here and begins Friday at 4 p.m. in F&M Trust Co.’s Fulton Theatre on North Second Street in downtown McConnellsburg. It continues Saturday in the same location from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

For holiday shoppers, “Christmas In McConnellsburg” offers an opportunity to buy gifts, many handmade, close to home. Chamber officials say the theatre will be full of unique gift items, including jewelry, crafts, gourmet food and candles.

Still looking for the perfect tree? There will be plenty to choose from outside the theatre and wreaths, too, at this year’s Christmas show.

Santa Claus is expected at the theatre at 6 p.m. on Friday and will stick around until 8 p.m. so that kids can have a photo taken with him. The $2 cost benefits the Fulton County Catholic Mission’s Treasures for Kids program.

The Dublin Mills Church will complete Friday night’s shopping experience with Christmas caroling.

“Christmas In McConnellsburg” also includes a number of area merchants who will extend their hours Friday evening for Christmas shopping.

The theatre reopens to shoppers at 9 a.m on Saturday. In addition to shopping, free horse-drawn wagon rides will be offered from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., weather permitting.

Shopping often requires sustenance and the chamber has that covered with the addition of food both Friday and Saturday to its lineup of goods for sale at the theatre.

Chamber officials remind Saturday morning visitors to “Christmas In McConnellsburg” to check out the United Methodist Church’s “Breakfast In Bethlehem” program featuring a live nativity, a free interactive breakfast, costumed characters and Santa Claus. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. in the church’s education building across the street from the theatre.

“Christmas In Mc- Connellsburg” is cosponsored this year by Fulton County Parks & Recreation Commission, which, along with the chamber, urges the community to support its local economy and shop at home this holiday season.
