Mourners Gather To Honor Dead Pa. Firefighter

NORTH IRWIN, Pa. (AP) – Mourners are gathering, and a procession of fire vehicles is honoring a western Pennsylvania firefighter who died of an apparent heart attack while responding to a call.

Sixty-three-year-old James Gumbert died shortly after he collapsed about 3 a.m. Wednesday when he arrived at the North Irwin fire station in Westmoreland County. Crews were responding to a reported house fire at the time.

Firefighters held a memorial service for Gumbert Sunday night.

His funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Norwin Christian Church in North Huntingdon Township.

Fire Chief Tom Harrison tells WTAE-TV that Gumbert was a quiet, “behindthe scene kind of guy’’ who did a lot for the fire company about 25 miles east of Pittsburgh.
