Forbes Road Board Meets Briefly

Addresses field trips and personnel

Forbes Road School Board members addressed a short agenda at their regular meeting last Monday evening. Extracurricular activity positions, curriculum, personnel and field trip approvals topped the agenda that was completed in one-half hour.

The board approved the 2010- 2011 extracurricular activity positions and rates as presented and also approved the athletic director’s recommendations for winter coaching positions as presented.

The board also approved the planned curriculums for general music, grades K-3 and grades 4-6.

Field trips approved included: first grade to Hershey on May 3, 2011, to visit Zoo America and Chocolate World; second grade to Lincoln Caverns in May 2011 to explore caves, rocks and fossils; sixth grade to Washington, D.C., on May 10, 2011, to visit monuments and memorials; the band on November 11 to Veterans Day services in McConnellsburg (at a cost of $84); and the band on November 20 to Waynesboro and Chambersburg for Christmas parades (at a cost of $227.50).

The board also approved building use requests, including: use of school premises for bus driver training during November 9, 10 and 13; use of the gym on Sunday afternoons over the fall and winter months for recreational basketball for those over 35 years of age; use of the old high school gym for an elementary basketball camp from November 15-18 for grades 4- 6; and a request from AYSO soccer 909 asking for use of the elementary library for their board meetings to be coordinated with building level principals.

Unanimous approval was also given to a list of items to be disposed of in a manner most beneficial to the school district, with the stage coach climber to be added to the list.

A motion to approve a bus stop on Great Cove Road to be picked up on northbound Route 522 failed for a second, and the board then voted unanimously to table the matter.

The board also voted unanimously to approve several policies, one change in policy and the 2010-11 special education handbook was approved as well.

Under personnel, the following actions were approved: Jason Horton was named as a mentor for Stacey Horne; Callista Baer (elementary ed), Jennifer Miller (elementary and special ed), Michael Wagner II (IU certified) were added to the teacher substitute list: Heidi McMath was approved as a student teacher for the first grade; and Thomas Kern was approved as a bus driver for Helman Bus Service. Tracey Fletcher was added as a cheerleading coach at step one on the salary schedule; Heidi O’Neal was added as a girls junior high basketball coach at step five; and Kari Fogal was added as assistant girls junior high basketball coach at step one.

The board also heard reports from Lisa Black and Christina Ramsey on the Artists in Residence grant program, which will include Slim Harrison conducting a program of folk instruments and music. Christina Ramsey reported on the field hockey district game, red ribbon week and a soccer playoff game.

The next regular meeting of the Forbes Road Board of Directors will be held on December 6, 2010, at 7 p.m., while a negotiation meeting will be held on November 17, 2010.
