Flagger, 85, Dies After Struck By SUV

YORK, Pa. (AP) – Authorities in central Pennsylvania say a workman died after being struck in a construction zone.

York Area Regional Police say 85-year-old George Waltemyer of Red Lion was working as a flagger for Columbia Gas in York Township when he was hit by an SUV at about 9:30 a.m. Friday.

Deputy Coroner Claude Stabley says Waltemyer went into cardiac arrest as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at York Hospital less than an hour later. An autopsy is scheduled Monday at Lehigh Valley Hospital.

Company spokesman Mike Marcus says Waltemyer was a temporary employee hired by a contractor working on upgrades to gas lines. The crash is under investigation.
