Farm Safety And Health Week Recognized

The 67th annual National Farm Safety and Health Week is September 19-25, 2010. This year’s focus is ATVS: Work Smart. Ride Safe. The members of the Fulton County Farm Bureau would like to remind everyone to be safe when riding ATVs for work or play with some helpful safety tips.

Make sure the ATV operator fits the machine. Youths riding adult-sized ATVs account for nearly 90 percent of injuries and fatalities. Overloading an ATV changes the center of gravity and increases the risk of rolling or flipping. Carry no more than one-third of the weight of the ATV on the rear rack to be safe. The tow weight should be no more than the combined weight of the ATV and the operator. Be sure to outfit yourself in the right safety gear. Helmets face shields, and goggles are recommended for all operators. Overthe ankle work boots or shoes with a heel are a must for safety.

The Fulton County Farm Bureau is a voluntary organization that works to advance the interests of agriculture and rural communities. It offers numerous benefits and services to its 330 members, and is affiliated with the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and the American Farm Bureau Foundation.
