A recently married young couple and a young serviceman died in an early morning blaze on Saturday which destroyed a two-story frame house in the village of New Grenada. The young couple, William Ritchey, 19, and his wife, Rene (Marshall) Ritchey, 19, who were married in June, and Stephen Robert Jones, 22, who was home on leave from the Coast Guard and staying with the Ritcheys, were found in the north and south upstairs bedrooms on the west side of the home. The three were apparently overcome by smoke while asleep. The Hustontown Fire Co. was called to the home at 4:30 a.m. by next-door neighbors Delores and Donald Houck, who were awakened by the noise when the windows in the house exploded due to the intense heat. When firemen arrived at the scene, less than 15 minutes later, the whole structure was in flames. Damage to the home is estimated at $28,000.
Nine milk cows owned by Carl N. Carbaugh of near Cito were killed instantly when struck by lightning during a thunderstorm that ripped through the county about 8:00 p.m. last Thursday accompanied by a downpour of rain. The loss of the cattle is estimated at $10,000 at least.
