George L. Egolf
George Leroy Egolf, 87, Hancock, died Saturday, September 4, 2010, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born February 10, 1923, in Mercersburg, he was the son of the late Daniel and Florence Metcalf Egolf.
He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943-1945 and was a Purple Heart recipient.
He was a painting contractor for 67 years and an auctioneer for 20 years.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Fayetta Younker Egolf, whom he married June 3, 1942; three daughters: Carolle Plotner, Darlene Smith and Kathy Funk, all of Hancock; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters: Lydia Hykes, Ruth Hornbaker and Mary Straley; seven brothers: Charlie, Harry, Earl, Elmer, Ralph, Paul and John Egolf.
Services were held Wednesday, September 8, at 11:00 a.m., at Stone Bridge Church of the Brethren, Hancock. Rev. Harry E. Strite officiated. Burial was made in the church cemetery.
Grove Funeral Home, Hancock, was in charge of arrangements.
