Trial Ordered For Three In Fatal PA Police Shootout
PITTSBURGH (AP) – A western Pennsylvania judge has ordered three teenagers to stand trial on criminal homicide and nearly two dozen other charges in a July shootout with Pittsburgh police officers that left a 24-yearold mother dead.
District Judge David Barton made the ruling Friday in the case of 18-year-old Tyree Gaines, of Wilkinsburg, 19- year-old Richard Woodward, of East Hills and 18-year-old Amir Ferguson, of Wilkinsburg. The three are charged in the July 11 death of Arika Hainesworth during an alleged home invasion.
Authorities say Hainesworth and her son were in a home where drugs and money were being stored and the three broke in and demanded money. A police officer testified that a man in the doorway aimed an assault rifle at him and seconds later a gun battle and chase erupted.
Prosecutors say ballistics tests show that Hainesworth was not shot by police.
