9/11 Memorial Service At Letterkenny
The service will be a central part of the initial dedication of the Freedom Community Park Project, a recreation area being developed by the Hamilton Heights and Scotland Broncos youth leagues, which will oversee the conversion of 39 acres of former depot land into ball fields.
The service will follow a 5K run and precede a motorcycle rally to the Flight 93 National Memorial, followed by a late afternoon barbeque and fireworks at the Pavilion.
The speaker will be The Honorable Ray Musto, state senator representing the 14th PA Senatorial District, which includes Wilkes-Barre, Hazelton and Pittston. Sen. Musto, together with the late Sen. Terry Punt, played an instrumental role in the effort to protect and restore the Letterkenny Chapel following the BRAC realignment in 1995, and has been a strong supporter of the Chapel since then. Built by Italian war prisoners at the end of WW II, the Chapel has been a particular focus of Italian-American cultural associations in which Sen. Musto has been active.
Special music for the service will be provided by the Falling Spring Presbyterian Church Brass Choir, directed by David Wenerd. Charles F. Nitterhouse Post 1599 of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars will present the colors and lead military honors as part of the rally.
A freewill offering will be taken to support the continuing heritage and ministry of the Chapel in the community. The service is sponsored by the United Churches of Chambersburg Area.
