23rd Annual Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest
Did you see all those apple pies at the Fulton County Fair in August? Our own hometown bakers created those special pies for competition in the annual Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest.
This year’s Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest winner was Iva Swindell from Needmore.
Apple Pie Crust: 2 cups flour 2/3 cup vegetable oil
1/3 cup water
Combine all 3 ingredients divide dough in 1/2. Roll out between wax paper.
8 medium Golden Delicious apples
Dash of salt 1 cup sugar Dash of nutmeg 1/4 cup cornstarch 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
Mix all ingredients together (except apples). Bring mixture to a boil (with 3 cups water). Add apples; simmer 10 minutes. Remove apples from syrup, put in pie crust. Top with other 1/2 of pie crust. Bake at 375 degrees for 45-50 minutes.
More than 100 fairs across the state are offering cash prizes as part of the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest. Fulton County Fair contest is a preliminary competition that leads to the selection of the final Blue Ribbon Apple Pie winner to be held each January at the Pennsylvania State Farm Show. This year’s contest was once again sponsored by the Pennsylvania Apple Marketing Board, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs.
