Great Cove’s 2010 tournment schedule heated up over the weekend with firstround play Sunday in the men’s championship competition that finishes play this Labor Day weekend.

Leading in the championship flight are Brett Cornelius, 72; Jason Long, 77; Bryan Campbell, 81; Tony Foreman, 82; and Chris Kennedy, Gary Bard, Larry Lecompte and Lucas Carbarugh, all with 83s.

First-flight leaders are Fred Peck, 79; Jamie Greathead, 81; Tim Ranck, 83; Kirk Powers and Bob Paruch, 86; and Russell Harmon, 87.

Emmert Banzoff, David Washabaugh and Carl Paylor shot 87s to lead the second flight competition. They are followed by Smoke Mellott, 89; Butch Doyle and Andy Washabaugh, 90; and Toby Skiles, 91.

The second round of the men’s championship takes place this Saturday, with the third and final round following on Sunday.

Jason Long was Saturday’s EDS tournament low gross winner after beating Mike Kendall on hole No. 2 in a playoff. Both golfers shot a 72 to take them to the match faceoff.

Low net winners were Bill Yocum, 67; Terry Sheeder, 68; and Emmert Banzoff, Butch Boyle and Jim Truax, 69.

Jamie Greathead and Brian Mellott are the winners of Men’s League secondhalf competition and will play the first-half winners for the overall title after a playoff between the first-half teams tied for first place. Those teams are Clark Brant/Buzz Carmack and Bob Snyder/ Dale Keebaugh. Greathead and Mellott scored 54.5 points to take the secondhalf title. They are followed by John Mixell/Bryan Campbell, 53.5; Toby Skiles/Jason Gordon, 52.5; Carl Paylor/ Andy Washabaugh, 51.5; Ryan Earley/Foster Earley, 50.5; and Clark Brant/Buzz Carmack, 49.5.

After 16 weeks of Ladies League competition, Kim Sheeder leads in overall points with 102. Cindy Blair, 90; Deana Everhart, 90; Lois O’Donnell, 77; Betty Boyle, 76; and Kay Wagner, 76, follow.

In last week’s golf news, Fred Peck was incorrectly reported as Ken Peck in the listing of second-place winners at Aug. 22’s Vegas-style scramble.
