On Wednesday, August 25, the master gardeners of Franklin County’s Penn State Cooperative Extension held their 10th Annual Tomato Tasting Day at the Horticultural Center on Franklin Farm Lane in Chambersburg. New to Tomato Tasting this year was a salsa contest, where entrants were invited to bring a large bowl of their own special salsa, along with some chips and the recipe.

Franklin County Commissioner David Keller was the celebrity judge who chose the “Critic’s Choice” salsa, selecting a salsa created by Master Gardener Darl Hospelhorn of Waynesboro. The People’s Choice salsa, chosen by votes from the many Tomato Day participants, was “Chunky Peachy Salsa”, created by Sheila Keebaugh of Needmore, Pa.

“I’ve been working on this recipe for about five years,” says Keebaugh. “I love to play around with recipes, and in fact, I have a new idea of how I’d like to change it even now!”

Keebaugh obtained the origi- nal recipe from a friend five years ago, and has been making changes to it ever since, saying she’s looking forward – perhaps with a new recipe? – to attending the Tomato Day festivities next year.

Tomato Tasting Day is free and open to the public. For more information, call 717-263-9226, ext.234.
