Cowans Gap Actvities

The Pennslyvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following activities at the park:

August 25: For the Birds. Find out what kinds of things you can do to give birds a helping hand. Then make a special gift for the birds to take home! This program begins at the amphitheater at 9:00 a.m. and is suitable for all ages.

Child’s Play: Bring your preschool-age children to the park for some fun and learning! Today’s theme is bugs. Activities for this program may include a story, craft, outdoor exploration or other activity. Playtime can sometimes be messy, so be sure your children are dressed in play clothes and shoes, and have appropriate attire for the outdoors. Child’s Play will begin at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 11:00 a.m.

August 26: Butterfly ID. Learn how to identify some common butterflies and then practice your new skills on a visit to the park’s wildlife gardens. Also, pick up tips on creating a butterfly sanctuary in your own backyard! This program begins at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 9:00 a.m.

Family Backpack Adventure: Is your family looking for something to do this afternoon? Why not go on an adventure! Stop by the Brightbill Interpretive Center to pick up a themed, loaner backpack with activities and materials to spend a couple fun hours together in the outdoors. Themes may include butterflies, insects, birds, trees or others. This activity will be available from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

August 27 - Invaders! There are alien invaders all around us, but most folks never know they exist. Yes, that’s right; we’re being infiltrated by enemies that we don’t even recognize! Arm yourself with the knowledge to identify these invaders, and learn how we can all do battle with non-native invasive plant and animal species. Meet at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 7:30 p.m.

August 28: Nature Photography Scavenger Hunt. Don’t just come out to the park; explore it with a Nature Photography Scavenger Hunt! Learn the basics of using a digital camera for nature photography and then have fun exploring the park. A limited number of park cameras are available to borrow for the program or bring your own. Those who borrow a park camera will be able to take their pictures home on a disk. Meet at the amphitheater at 2:00 p.m.

Scenic Photography Hike: Come along on a photography hike along Knobsville Road Trail. Our two-mile round trip hike will turn around at the park overlook where we will have time to take some late evening photos. Sturdy hiking shoes and a bottle of water are advised for this moderate hike. Bring your camera and capture the wonderful views along the way! Also, bring a flashlight, as the sun will be setting just about the time of our return. Meet at the amphitheater at 6:00 p.m. to join in this hike.

August 29 - Fish Prints: Create art while learning about the lives of fish! Fish printing materials will be provided. This is a great activity for kids of any age. Fish printing will take place near the beach house from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

What Lives in a Lake? All kinds of interesting things live in lakes: Fish, frogs and even jellyfish, just to name a few! Discover some of these amazing creatures in this slideshow presentation at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 5:30 p.m.
