10th Annual Tomato Tasting Day To Feature New Salsa Contest

On Wednesday, August 25, from noon to 5 p.m., the master gardeners of Franklin County’s Penn State Cooperative Extension will hold their 10th Annual Tomato Tasting Day at the Horticultural Center on Franklin Farm Lane in Chambersburg.

The master gardeners’ tomato tasting is a blind taste test, where the public tastes many different types of tomatoes and rates them on a scale of 1-5 for flavor and aesthetics. After turning in their “report card” rating the varieties, participants are given a key describing each variety, and the source of the seed, so they can look for and plant their favorites next year.

New to tomato tasting this year will be a salsa contest, where entrants are invited to bring a large bowl of their own special salsa, along with some chips and the recipe, to compete for the honor of “Best Salsa,” to be decided at 2 p.m. that day!

Tomato Tasting Day is free and open to the public. For more information, call (717) 263-9226, ext. 234.
