Cowans Gap Activities
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming public programs:
August 11 - Forest Discovery Hike. There’s more to a forest than the trees! Explore some of the relationships within a forest and learn about what you can do to protect forest habitats. This hike involves a moderate incline over some uneven and loose rocky terrain, so sturdy footwear is advised. Meet at the amphitheater at 9:00 a.m. to join in this hike.
Child’s Play: Bring your preschool-age children to the park for some fun and learning! Today’s theme is butterflies. Activities for this program include a story, craft and outdoor exploration. Playtime can sometimes be messy, so be sure your children are dressed in play clothes and shoes, and have appropriate attire for the outdoors. Child’s Play will begin at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 11:00 a.m.
August 13: Forest Pests! Meet at the boat launch parking lot at 7:00 p.m. to join DCNR forester, Dave Scamardella as he leads the group on an evening hike. Find out about some of the local forest bad bugs you may encounter and what you can do to help stop them.
August 14 - Bats! Discover the lives of these little winged creatures of the night. Find out why they prefer nighttime, what they’re doing at Cowans Gap, and why we need bats in our world. Then pick up some tips on how you can help the bats in your neighborhood! This program will be held at the bat boxes near the amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. Bring a camp chair or blanket to sit on. Arrive early to sample some snacks made possible by bats!
August 15 - Leaf Rubbings: Stop by the display table near the beach house to do some leaf rubbings! See if you can identify each leaf species and learn why leaves are so important to trees. This display will be available from 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.
Migration Magic: Many animals go through the annual process of migration. Find out why species migrate, where they travel to and from, and learn about some of the challenges that face local migratory species in this slideshow presentation at the Brightbill Interpretive Center. Program begins at 5:30 p.m.
