Vacation Bible School New Grenada Church of God VBS will be held August 9 thru Aug. 13, from 6:00 till 8:00 p.m. each evening. Bible lessons, puppets, singing and lots of fun.

Bible School Cito United Methodist Church will hold Vacation Bible School from August 4-8, Wednesday to Saturday, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and 9:15 a.m. on Sunday. The theme is “Hero Headquarters.” This will be a fun-filled week learning Bible lessons, games, crafts, singing and refreshments. There will be classes for preschool through adult. Camp Meeting Crystal Spring camp meeting will be held August 13-22. Evening evangelist services will be conducted nightly at 7:30 p.m. with Duane Jensen from the Hancock United Methodist Church. In addition, Holy Communion and memorial service overseen by Rev. Norman Huff will be held Tuesday, August 17, starting at 11 a.m. Information can be obtained the week of the camp meeting by calling 814-735-4918.

Back-To-School Prayer Night A back-to-school prayer night on August 24, 2010; at the Forbes Road High School auditorium. The program will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be open to the public. All are welcome to come and begin the new school year with a blanket of prayer.

Fun Night Community family fun night will be held at Fairview United Methodist Church on North Hess Road, Harrisonville, Saturday, August 14, beginning at 4:00 p.m. There will be games and activities for children of ages (2-92). There will also be hot dogs, beverages and snacks. There is no charge for anything, so grab lawn chairs and come for an evening of free fun and fellowship.

Special Music Third annual guitar giveaway and contemporary Christian music at Buck Valley Park on Saturday, August 7, beginning at 3 p.m. Free admission to five different groups. Kitchen open. Bring lawn chairs.

Family Outdoor Movie The final movie of the summer will be “Letters To God” on Saturday, August 21. The hot dog roast will start at 6:00 p.m., followed by the movie. The movie will be shown in the pavilion but can be moved into the Fellowship Hall if needed. Bring your lawn chair. Popcorn will be served. This is all free to the public. Concert Jason Burton will be in concert at Pleasant Ridge Church of the Nazarene, Harrisonville, Pa., Sunday evening, August 15, at 6:30 p.m. Jason has been ministering in music for 10 years presenting the gospel in song first with his sister and now with his wife, Kristi. Jason has several top songs to his credit and has performed with many top artists. Their music is a mix of folk, pop, Celtic, and even a hint of country. Jason plays acoustic guitar and sings lead. Kristi, also an accomplished musician, played violin in the Rapid City, S.D., symphony and now backs Jason in concert. The community is invited to join Pleasant Ridge congregation for the concert and refreshments and a time of fellowship following the concert. RECREATION

Cruise-In A car cruise-in will be held Saturday, August 21, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Burnt Cabins Grist Mill. Dash plaques for the first 25 registrants. Food available at campground kitchen. More information may be obtained by calling 717-987-3244.

Bus Trip A Bus trip to Boyds Bear Country in Gettysburg to attend the 2010 BasketFest with Longaberger will be August 28. This is the sixth year for the BasketFest and basket weavers will be on site. The bus leaves at 8:00 a.m. from Giant. Tour planner is Deb Toothman and cost is $30, which includes bus, drink, snacks and games. Call for more details and to sign-up at 717-485-3718. 3D Shoot A 3D shoot will be held August 8, 2010, registration from 8:00 a.m. till noon at Appleway Archers of the St. Thomas Sportsmen. Shoots every Thursday evening in August. Registration from 4:30 till 6:30.

Summer Reading Program Library Summer Reading Program pool party at Great Cove Golf Course, Cito Road, McConnellsburg, on Saturday, August 7, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with a picnic at 4:00 p.m. (Raindate is August 14). SF Volleyball Schedule Southern Fulton volleyball schedule is as follows: conditioning (optional) for grades 7-12 at SFHS, Monday, August 9, through Friday, August 13. Practice for grades 9-12 will be held Monday, August 16, and Wednesday, August 18, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.; and Tuesday, August 17, and Thursday, August 19, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Practices for grades 7-8 at SF Elementary will be held Monday, August 16, thru Friday, August 20, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., except Thursday, August 19, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. More information may be obtained by calling Mrs. Dickerhoff at 294-6866.

Golf Tournament The Chamber of Commerce will hold its 14th annual golf tournament on Friday, August 20, at Great Cove Golf Course. Price of $65 per golfer includes greens and cart fees, meal with beverages, snacks and gift bag. Scramble format, may make up own teams with only one player with 9 handicap or less. Trap Shoots Trap shoot practice will be held every Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Pistol and Rifle Club. The third Sunday of each month will be a 100-target shoot starting at noon.

Bus Trip A bus trip is planned for August 10 by the North End Garden Club to Shalom Rodef Biblical Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh. See and learn about plants used in the ancient Near East and Israel. All are welcome. Cost is a $25 deposit by June 20. More information may be obtained by calling Sheila at 573-2905. Bus Trip Modern Woodmen of America Camp 7948 is sponsoring a bus trip to Baltimore on August 10. The bus departs from the McConnellsburg Courthouse at 7:00 a.m. A stop will be made at Frederick, Md., at Bob Evans (on your own) at approximately 8:30 a.m. and arrive at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore around 10:30 a.m. The bus will depart the National Aquarium at 4:20 p.m. A stop will be made in Greencastle around 6:15 p.m. for dinner (on your own) at Ryan’s Steak House and arrive back in McConnellsburg around 8:30 p.m. Cost is $24 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under.

Seashell Art Summer Reading Program with Jessica Truax for ages 8 and up Tuesday, August 10, from 6-7 p.m. in the community room at the Fulton County Library. Registration is appreciated. Please call 717-485-5327, ext, 207, for further information.

Fulton House Museum Display The Fulton County Historical Society has a display of old kitchen utensils and local needlework at the Fulton House on temporary loan. Summer hours are every Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with additional hours by request. The exhibit is free and includes the society’s permanent museum collection plus books, shirts and other items available for purchase.

MEETINGS

Scout Meeting Boy Scouts of America Troop 43 meets every Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in McConnellsburg. It is open to all boys 11-18 years of age. Conservation Board Meetings Fulton County Conservation District Board of Directors monthly meetings for 2010 will be held on the following dates and times: August 12, 7:30 p.m.; September 9, 7:30 p.m.; October 14, 7:30 p.m.; November 11, 10:30 a.m.; and December 9, 10:30 a.m. The budget and finance, personnel and programs and services committees meet one-half hour prior to the regular board meeting. All district meetings are held in the Conservation District board room located at 216 North Second Street, McConnellsburg, unless otherwise noted.

FOOD & DINING

Ice Cream Social/Parade An ice cream social will be held August 14 at Needmore Firehall. Music will be by Night Drive. Food, games, fire trucks and lots of fun. Parade begins at 7:00 p.m. More information may be obtained by calling 717- 573-2821.

Pig Roast A pig roast will be held at Ebenezer United Methodist Church August 28. Everyone is welcome. Bring family and a covered dish. The roast pig, drinks and other amenities will be provided. Seating is available, however, feel free to bring lawn chairs. There is no charge, but a freewill offering will be taken for the musicians. Music by The Silver Creek Band will be at 4:00 p.m., roast pig supper at 5:00 p.m. and music at 6:00 p.m. The church is located at 226 Ebenezer Church Road, Needmore. Festival Siloam United Methodist Church will hold a festival August 21, at 4:00 p.m. Served will be sandwiches, soup, pie, homemade ice cream. The Country Christians will provide the music. The church is located south of Harrisonville on Rt. 655. All are welcome.

Festival Whips Cove Church, Moss Road, Warfordsburg, will be having its annual festival Saturday, August 14, starting at 5:00 p.m. Hot dogs, steamers, fresh made soup, french fries, homemade pies, cake walks, variety of games and, of course, homemade ice cream. Music for the evening will be the New Connection.

Festival Laurel Ridge Church will hold a festival Saturday, August 14, starting at 5:00 p.m., at Big Cove Tannery. Homemade soups, ice cream, sandwiches, soda and baked goods will be available. Entertainment and activities for the children will be provided. Everyone is invited for a night of fellowship and good food. Held rain or shine.

Ice Cream Festival Fairview United Methodist Church will holdan ice cream festival September 11. The church is located four miles north of Hustontown on North Hess Road. Homemade ice cream, soups, sandwiches, french fries and desserts will be for sale. The festivals will begin at 4:00 p.m. All are welcome.

Free Meal A free meal will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, North Third Street, McConnellsburg, the second Tuesday of each month from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join in for fellowship and good food.

Angel Food Ministry Sign-up for Angel Food Ministry will be at the Fulton County Catholic Mission on Tuesday, August 10, from 1-5 p.m., Wednesday, August 11, from 1-6 p.m. and on Thursday, August 12, from 1-5 p.m. On Saturday, August 14, at the Warfordsburg Presbyterian Church, from 9:30-11 a.m. If you would like a menu or more information, call 485- 5917.

Christian Social Services New Location Christian Social Services has moved from 220 North Third Street to 121 North Second Street, McConnellsburg, as of August 1.

Forbes Road Back-To-School Orientation Forbes Road School District will be holding a back-to-school orientation for students starting K-4, kindergarten, first grade, seventh grade and new enrollees at the high school. Orientation at both buildings is set for Monday, August 23, starting at 6:30 p.m. The elementary orientation will end at 8 p.m., and the high school’s event will conclude at 7:30 p.m.

Forbes Road Open House Forbes Road School District is holding an open house for students and parents on Thursday, September 23, between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Students enrolled in K-4 through 12th grade are encouraged to attend.

Tonoloway Primitive Baptist Church Photos Wanted Friends of Tonoloway Primitive Baptist Church is seeking old photographs of Tonoloway Primitive Baptist Church and/or activities that took place in the churchyard to copy for display at the Friends’ Oct. 2, 2010, worship service at the church. The 2 p.m. service will celebrate the brick church building’s 175th anniversary. All photos will be returned and should be submitted to the Friends by Sept. 1, 2010. Contact Lindsay R. SF Pre-Kindergarten Registration Southern Fulton School district has a few openings in the pre-kindergarten program for the 2010-11 school year. If you have children who will be 3 or 4 years old before September 1, 2010, please call the elementary at 717-294-3400 to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

School Supplies Fulton Catholic Mission will be collecting school supplies for students who attend the schools in Fulton County. The public drop-off areas are Fulton County Catholic Mission, Save-a-Lot, Snyder’s Insurance Agency, Dott Store in Warfordsburg, Keller’s Country Store, Hustontown and Park Station in Fort Littleton. The mission will have available free school supplies on Monday, August 23, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, at the social hall of St. Stephen Catholic Church in McConnellsburg.

Fix Reunion The annual Fix reunion will be held Sunday, August 15, at the American Legion picnic grounds. Plans are to eat at 12:30 p.m. Bring items for a white elephant sale.

Green Hill Reunion Everyone affiliated with the Green Hill School and guests are invited to attend a reunion on Saturday, August 14. Social hour will be held at 5:30 p.m. and dinner served at 6:30 p.m. at Sideling Hill Christian Church fellowship hall, 10424 Sipes Mill Road, four miles south of Route 30. Knepper/Shaver Reunion The 51st Knepper/Shaver families reunion will be held Saturday, August 21. The reunion will start at 11:00 a.m. with a ride on the East Broad Top Railroad for those interested at Rock Hill, followed by a covered dish lunch at Center Church Community building at approximately 1:00 p.m. Bring a favorite covered-dish or two. All descendants are expected and welcome. Games and fellowship for all.

McKee Reunion The annual McKee reunion will be held August 7 at Warfordsburg Community Park. Plans are to eat approximately at 1:00 p.m. Items for a silent auction will be appreciated.

Back Run School Reunion Anyone affiliated with the Back Run School is invited to attend a reunion on Saturday, August 7, at the Senior Citizen Center just off Cito Rd.
