Cowans Gap Activities

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming programs:

August 4 Damsels & Dragons

Learn about the complicated life cycle of these aerial acrobats, then go on a walk to try and spot some of them in action. Meet at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 9:00 am to join us.

Child’s Play - Bring your preschool age children to the park for some fun and learning! Today’s theme is observing nature. Activities for this program may include a story, craft, outdoor exploration or other activity. Playtime can sometimes be messy, so be sure your children are dressed in play clothes and shoes, and have appropriate attire for the outdoors. Child’s Play will begin at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 11:00 a.m.

August 5 - Tree ID

Find out how to identify some common tree species by examining their leaves and bark. Then make a leaf identification booklet to take home. This program begins at the amphitheater at 9:00 a.m., and is suitable for all ages.

Family Backpack Adventure

Is your family looking for something to do this afternoon? Why not go on an adventure! Stop by the Brightbill Interpretive Center to pick up a themed loaner backpack with activities and materials to spend a couple fun hours together in the outdoors. Themes may include butterflies, insects, birds, trees, or others. This activity will be available from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

August 6 - What Lives in a Lake?

All kinds of interesting things live in lakes: Fish, frogs and even jellyfish, just to name a few! Discover some of these amazing creatures in this presentation at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 7:30 p.m.

August 7 - History by Lamplight

From the formation of a wind gap to the creation of a lake, discover the unique history of Cowans Gap on this gentle evening stroll. Bring a flashlight or lantern, as we will be venturing into the gathering darkness. Meet at the amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. to come along.

August 8 - Adopt-a-Tree

Celebrate Smokey Bear’s birthday by adopting a tree! Stop by the display table near the beach house to learn how. Show a tree that you think it’s special! This activity will be available from 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.

Nature’s Cleanup Crew

Without the cleanup crew, our world would be a very disgusting place! Turkey vultures, opossums and scavenging beetles all help rid our world of dead things. Come learn about these and other members of the cleanup crew in this slideshow presentation at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 5:30 p.m.

Sun: 11:00 am-1:00 p.m.
