PA Man To Use Insanity Defense In Wife’s Murder
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) – The attorney for an eastern Pennsylvania man charged with killing his wife two years ago says he intends to use an insanity defense.
Authorities say 70-yearold Ramon Gomez of Bethlehem Township slashed and strangled 43-year-old Rosa Gomez in 2008 in their home and then tried to kill himself. Police said Rosa Gomez was seeking a divorce from her husband.
A state psychologist earlier this year deemed Gomez competent to stand trial after a lengthy stay in a mental hospital.
Northampton County Judge Edward Smith on Friday granted the prosecution’s request for its own evaluation of Gomez’s state of mind in preparation for a possible trial in October.
Defense attorney Glenn Goodge says his client “suffers from serious mental illness, uncontrolled intrusive thoughts, inability to concentrate, incoherence and dissociative thought patterns.’’
