Commission OKs New Area Code For Northeastern Pa.
SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) – Northeastern Pennsylvania will be getting a new area code in the coming year.
The state Public Utility Commission approved a plan Thursday for an overlay in the zone served by the 570 area code.
The region is expected to exhaust the phone numbers available in the 570 area code during 2011. When that happens, phone users will be assigned numbers with the new area code, even though they live in the same region.
Callers will have to dial all 10 digits of a local number – instead of the current seven – when the new area code is implemented.
The new area code number has not been announced.
