Cowans Gap Activities

Upcoming public programs at Cowans Gap State Park are as follows:

July 22 – Family Backpack Adventure: Is your family looking for something to do this afternoon? Why not go on an adventure! Stop by the Brightbill Interpretive Center to pick up a themed, loaner backpack with activities and materials to spend a couple fun hours together in the outdoors. Themes may include butterflies, insects, birds, preschool activities, or others. This activity will be available from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

July 23 – Paper Planes and Birds of Prey: Show off your paper airplane crafting skills, and then compare your plane to some birds of prey. Is your plane like a falcon or a red-tailed hawk? Find out what makes birds of prey so unique and what species you might see at Cowans Gap. Meet at the Amphitheater at 7:30 p.m.

July 24 – Photo Scavenger Hunt: Have some fun with this environmentally-friendly scavenger hunt! First, pick up a page of clues at the Brightbill Interpretive Center. Then use these clues to find the objects, but rather than gather the objects, simply snap a digital photo of each thing on the list. Once you’ve found them all, return to the center and receive a prize! Some cameras may be available to borrow, or bring your own. The hunt begins at 3:00 p.m.

Life Without Legs: Snakes are probably one of the creatures least loved by humans. But what if we looked at things from the snake’s point of view? Discover what life is like for these unique, legless animals, and find out what species you may encounter at Cowans Gap! This program will be held at the Amphitheater at 7:00 p.m.

July 25 – Leaf Rubbings: Stop by the display table near the beach house to do some leaf rubbings! See if you can identify each leaf species, and learn why leaves are so important to trees. This display will be available from 2:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m.

Intro to Using GPS: Learn the basics of using a handheld GPS! We’ll practice our new-found skills with a simple geocaching activity. GPS units will be provided. This family-friendly program begins at the Amphitheater at 5:30 p.m.
