Cowans Gap Activities

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming public programs:

July 8 – Senior Series: Flower Dancers. Explore the magic of flower pollination and the tiny creatures that make it possible. After becoming acquainted with some of these creatures, we’ll travel to the park’s wildlife garden to try and spot some of them in action! Meet at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 9:00 a.m. to participate. This program is presented especially for seniors, but all ages are welcome to join us.

Family Backpack Adventure: Is your family looking for something to do this afternoon? Why not go on an adventure! Stop by the Brightbill Interpretive Center to pick up a themed, loaner backpack with activities and materials to spend a couple fun hours together in the outdoors. Themes may include butterflies, insects, birds, preschool activities, or others. This activity will be available from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

July 9 – CCC History: Join us at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 7:30 p.m. to learn about what life was like for the hardworking young men of the Civilian Conservation Corps. See some short videos of CCC boys in action, and learn about their work at Cowans Gap. Bring your stories and photos of family members who worked in the CCC to share with the group.

July 10 – Fish Prints: Create art while learning about the lives of fish! Fish printing materials will be provided, but feel free to bring a clean T-shirt, bandana or pillowcase to apply prints to. This is a great activity for kids of any age. Fish printing will take place at the Amphitheater at 7:30 p.m.

What Lives in a Lake? All kinds of interesting things live in lakes: Fish, frogs and even jellyfish, just to name a few! Discover some of these amazing creatures in this presentation at the Amphitheater at 8:30 p.m.

July 11 – Snake Secrets. Snakes are quiet, so they don’t tell their secrets very often. But we’ve figured out some of them to share with you! Stop by the display table near the beach house to learn about the lives of snakes. This activity will be available from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Forest Discover Hike: There’s more to a forest than the trees! Explore some of the relationships within a forest and learn about what you can do to protect forest habitats. This hike involves a moderate incline over some uneven and loose rocky terrain, so sturdy footwear is advised. Meet at the Amphitheater at 5:30 p.m. to join in this hike.
