Police Say Pa. Son Bilked Elderly Dad Of $100K

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (AP) – State police have jailed a western Pennsylvania man on charges that he bilked his father out of more than $100,000 after offering to pay the elderly man’s bills.

Michael Lainey, 34, of Dixonville, is in the Jefferson County Jail unable to post $150,000 bond on dozens of counts, including forgery, identity theft, and theft by deception.

State police in Punxsutawney say Lainey offered to manage his 70-year-old father’s finances, then spent more than $90,000 of his father’s money in checking, money market, and retirement accounts. Police say Lainey also spent more than $24,000 using his father’s credit cards.

Online court records do not list an attorney for Lainey who faces a preliminary hearing June 16.
